Yo! MTV Raps Turns 20, but...

Now less than ever living up to its name, Music Television will commemorate the 20th anniversary of its seminal hip-hop show, Yo! MTV Raps, all this month with numerous specials and guests. That’s all fine and dandy. The problem is, the show was on the air from 1988-1995 and hasn’t been on the air in 13 years! The best way to mark the occasion would be to BRING IT BACK and give some deserving hip-hop out there a chance to reach a wider audience while giving the rest of us a break from all this nonsense masquerading as hip-hop, which is nothing more than the rap equivalent of hair metal. Sheesh!

And maybe we should be lauding people like Ralph McDaniels and Video Music Box before MTV.

As we discussed, Kiko, there's an excellent opportunity with the internationalization of hip hop (all the killer rap coming from North Africa, Russia, Latin America, Asia) to have a show that could be as interesting as MTV Raps (or 120 minutes or Headbangers' Ball) was in its time. Never mind how much MTV resisted having any rap in the first place.

It's a great idea, Caro, but are American audiences gonna be receptive to hip-hop in another language, especially a genre so intrinsically tied to its lyrical content?
