Chairman of the Bored

U2 frontman Bono unveiled today the first in a series of scheduled New York Times Op-Ed pieces he'll be writing for the paper of record. In it he muses on Frank Sinatra; Old Blue Eyes's disparate readings of "My Way"; and what he'd say about the Irish band's marathon-like recording sessions, are among the subjects touched on.

[yawn]

But here's the big howler:

"Like Bob Dylan’s, Nina Simone’s, Pavarotti’s, Sinatra’s voice is improved by age, by years spent fermenting in cracked and whiskeyed oak barrels."

Dylan's voice improved by age?!! Comparable to Pavarotti?! What the fuck is he smoking?!

As for Sinatra, we've always felt he had the flattest voice of any major performer celebrated for his singing, and thus, is incredibly over-rated in our book. (He did have an incredible pool of great songs to choose from. But we'll take Dino, any day.)

Anyway, Bono's piece can be read here.
